Skip the Khaosan crowds and head into Rambuttri Soi
Most farang stick to the main drag but Rambuttri Soi hides the best live music bars. Walk from Khaosan east for five minutes past the 7-Eleven and turn left into the narrow soi.
Thai rock bands that actually jam
Local bands play original songs mixed with Thai rock covers starting around 10:30pm. No cover charge at most places, just buy a Singha or two for 80 baht each. The vibe stays casual with plastic stools and street-side tables.
Sound systems are loud but not ear-bleeding. You can actually chat between sets. Many spots stay open till 3am when the last tuk-tuk leaves.
Walking the circuit after dark
Start at the soi entrance near the temple. Hit three bars in one night without spending over 500 baht total. Locals order khao pad between sets to soak up the booze.
Watch for flyers on poles announcing special guest singers on weekends. Prices jump to 150 baht for cocktails but stick to beer and save cash.
Best nights for live sets
Thursday through Saturday pull the biggest crowds and best bands. Sunday stays chill with acoustic Thai folk instead. Avoid Monday when many spots close early.
Bring cash only. Most places do not take cards and ATMs near Khaosan charge 220 baht fees.
