Why rooftops beat street-level madness

Down on Khaosan the buckets fly and tuk-tuks honk nonstop. Up top you get fresh air, city lights and proper cocktails without the elbow-to-elbow crush.

First stop: Above Eleven

Walk north from the 7-Eleven on Khaosan, cut into Soi Rambuttri and climb the hidden stairs behind the minimart. Sunset golden hour turns into neon glow by 9pm. Their signature yuzu-sake spritz costs 320 THB and the playlist stays deep house, never full-on EDM.

Grab the corner table facing the Grand Palace lights. Most farang still miss this spot because it looks like a random apartment building from street level.

Local whiskey with a view

Thai drinkers know the real deal happens at The Roof on Phra Sumen Road. Ten-minute walk from the main drag. Order a Mekhong highball for 180 THB and watch backpackers below turn the street into a dance floor.

Live acoustic sets start at 10pm on weekends. The owner, P'Joe, used to spin at RCA back in the day and still chats with regulars in Thai and broken English.

Late-night move: Sky Bar at Nasa

If you want to keep the night going past midnight, duck into the alley beside Buddy Lodge. Elevator to the 7th floor lands you at Sky Bar at Nasa. Bucket-free zone, thank god. Singha draft is 160 THB and the DJ switches to Thai pop remixes after 12:30am.

Pro move: order the tom yum inspired cocktail. It actually tastes like the real soup, minus the spice burn. 290 THB and surprisingly balanced.

Getting between spots without wasting time

Skip the taxis. All three rooftops sit within 800 meters of each other. From Above Eleven to The Roof is a straight 6-minute stroll down Phra Sumen. Then another 4 minutes to Sky Bar at Nasa via the back soi behind the temple.

Wear decent shoes. Those sois get wet and slippery after the nightly street cleaning crew passes through around 2am.
